The Great Mahele How It Affected Land Use
Recreation
During the reign if king Kamehameha the first land was given to the people through the king. The chiefs would oversee the land and the people would use it. The people would follow a system called the Kapu, this regulated what people could fish, farm and use. The Kapu continued all the way until the death of King Kamehameha the second. During the reign of king Kamehameha the third is when the Kuleana Act, otherwise known as the Great Mahele (land division) was issued. The act was broken up into three parts. Part one allowed the king to keep a part of land called the crown lands. Second the Government lands were given to the chiefs and the people. The third act of the Mahele was allowed the enabled the land commission to award small areas of land. This act greatly affected the Hawaiians. Many of the natives lost their land to foreigners, who used the land for many things; one of those uses was recreation.
Recreation is a big part of Hawaii today. There are two types of recreation land and ocean recreation. Recreation includes land being used for sports, parks, and even out in the ocean. Just in Hawaii alone there are 26 state parks, 286 county parks and almost the same amount of community centers. There are many issues that revolve around recreation. One of the big issues is the killing of the coral reefs due to the snorkeling or over swimming. When people snorkel or go swimming in coral reefs they step on and kill the coral reefs. Many reefs in Hawaii are experiencing a big decrease the most at 75%.
People are also over fishing another type of recreation. Fishing regulations are limits to which fishers and divers can catch the fish. The parrot fish can only be caught at 12 inches, but they are not able to reproduce until they are 13 inches or 1 year of life. Now that they are endangered and are important to the coral reefs the government is thinking of changing it to 14 inches. The parrot fish is used to clean algae off of the coral.
In my opinion I think the Mahele started off as a good thing. It was a time for change and for Hawaii to move forward. It brought different ideas to Hawaii, such as the production of sugar cane. With the production of sugar cane brought different ethnicities. It also bought the concept of whaling and fishing as a business. But what started off as a good thing started to go bad when we overused it and kicked the Hawaiians off of their land.
If the Great Mahele had not been issued the reefs would probably not be dying. The Kapu would have regulated the use of fishing and swimming in the waters. Now with the Mahele issued Land is used for different things.
Good blog, I think you did a great job explaining your topic, and I hope you keep up the good work in homework and in class. Excellent job!

ReplyDeleteI did not have enough time to look at the essay first, so I am back now, and here is what I think.
Now that I have more time to look at your blog, I think you did very well, you explained what was required of you to have in the draft, and an overall good job. You put details in how the Mahele was good or bad, and how ideas came to Hawaii, or what people do for recreation. Keep it up and good luck for future work!
thank you.
Hi Bryson,
ReplyDeleteYour essay is ok. There are some things you should fix. For one you might want to check the information on the first paragraph. Like you said the Kuleana Act is the Great Mahele but it is not, it is a part of the Great Mahele the Great Mahele is not the same thing as the Kuleana Act. Another thing you could do is not focus on the recreational use of the ocean and more on the recreational use of land since our project is on land use. Like you talk about fishing a lot and coral reef you should not talk about it as much. Next thing is you should stay away from stating your own opinion. For example you in the 4th paragraph it is all about your opinion instead you could state facts like how the Mahele was good or bad and more on recreational land use or take it out that paragraph. Also try to stay on topic so it won't be confusing. Lastly you need to talk about the current issue for our topic which is about how the ceded land (former crown lands) are being used and the big controversy. Other than that you did a really good job and it shows that you did your research and know what you are talking about. Like you use stats and numbers and that shows your research. Good job on writing it if you just fix those things it will be great.

Hey Bryson.
ReplyDeleteI want to revise my comment and add to it, along with giving you a rundown on it. You need to fix the sentences, as not all of them are complete, and more like statements. The History, like Mikayla said, is incorrect. The Great Mahele was not the Kuleana act, and are two completely different things. Other than that, you address your issue well, explaining in detail about cause and effect, like the affect the Mahele has on business today. The only thing you can change about this is the part about fishing, as we are talking about land, and not the use of ocean or fish in our group.

Hi Bryson,
ReplyDeleteThis draft is a big improvement on the impromptu! Aside from the clarification that Mikayla made, you've done a good job of giving background of Hawaii land use.
I would disagree about including the ocean. For one this, land use affects the ocean. Remember the practice article I gave the class? It was about game animals, but it did cite what causes the reefs to die...and that is also impacted by the way land is used. You need to find more detaila about that.
That is the part of the essay that needs work...When you start to talk about recreation, you cite problems but you don't relate those to land use...and you need to do that to show cause and effect.
let me know if you have questions...
Nice job Mikayla...
Zachary, your final comment is just a repeat of what Mikayla said--that is not productive commentary.
